Grand Theft Auto: Manila is an upcoming total modification for the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It is currently made by members of The GTA Place, a worldwide society of GTA players. Note that we're not giving a rant or two about the city...

This project is perhaps the first video game to feature a Philippine city.

We're looking for contributors for GTA: Manila! See, I'm not joking about this; it ain't a hoax, it's for real! Email me at peanuthead_069@yahoo.com if you're interested in this project...

Why did you guys choose Manila?

The story about making Manila as the location for the GTA mod started when I read a reply in a GTA IV location wishlist thread from a Filipino guy named o.g jplip, who repeatedly suggested this city as a location for the upcoming GTA Part Four game. Liberty City was chosen instead, and the Filipino guy's dream dwindled into a dream.

I currently live in a suburb near Manila, so I know a lot about that city. Actually, the map Woozie made was too large to my tastes; since the map below is about 14 square miles, and San Andreas is 17 sq. miles. This project sprang to life when me, Urbanoutlaw and the other guys were talking about Paris Hilton. Outlaw then mentioned the mod idea, so it all ended up with this. I also thought of this city as a fitting place for the mod pack, since the city is actually plagued by gangs, corruption (some of the government officials there were like as worse as the Liberty City gangs), traffic jams, and poverty, as evidenced by the shanties. It's not really the worse place to live in the Philippines, but I think the political climate serves as a backdrop for this game.

Development Status

Development status is, well, in the beginning stage, although the boys have made progress in TXD editing, map edting, and all sorts of modding stuff. A teaser site was also made, although details about the storyline weren't revealed there as of now.

Development Team

  • Huckleberry Pie/Urbanoutlaw - Project Leaders
  • Wu-Zi-Mu - Storyline
  • RaDi0N - Car/place script programmer (or should I say modder)

...and the list goes on and on...

Storyline

The game is set in Manila, Philippines in 2007, seven years after Jose Delos Reyes escaped from the struggles of life in the city, a city tearing itself apart with poverty, gang trouble and corruption. A place where corrupt government officials thrive despite the penalties that were supposed to discipline them.

It's now 2007 and Jose has got to go home. His gang, Tribo Ni Jose, (English: Jose's Tribe), and his family have fallen apart and his neighborhood is turning into a drug mule for dealers and gang chiefs. On his return to the neighborhood, Jose was then emailed by his brother Arnel that three men from a rival gang called the Fili Kingz mugged and killed his father. Jose then committed himself to re-building the hood and avenging the death of his father.

Jose steadily befriends his new buddies, among them Carl "CJ" Johnson and Thomas "Tommy" Vercetti. The two went to the Philippines to take down a rival gang leader, who smuggled cars for profit.

The City

Street map of Manila, Philippines

The city's a semi-alternate version of Manila, with the island based off the real-life city. Major landmarks such as the Rizal Park, Manila Hotel, the City Hall, the NAIA and other monuments are also present in the game. The city organizations were changed to avoid further controversy, such as the City Welfare Bureau (CWB), parodying the MMDA, the Manila Police Department, with its panda-colored police cars, and other organizations.

The mayor in the mod is Lito Dela Cruz, who recently won the 2007 Philippine Elections.

The Characters

Jose "Big Joe" Delos Reyes

Jose is the protagonist and the anti-hero in the game. He came from a middle-class, average family, and spent his childhood in the suburbs of Cavite. He and his family then moved to Manila to live with their relatives. In August of 2000, Jose founded Tribo ni Jose, a gang consisting of ten members. He then learned of his father's sudden death after being emailed by his brother, Arnel. Saddened by the incident, and bothered by other personal problems, he then went home to avenge the death of his father and to re-establish his hood, which is now in disarray.

Like Carl Johnson, Jose isn't really the merciless sort of person such as Tommy Vercetti. Jose's a street criminal, but he's not really into commiting mass murder; he knows his limits and he's not going to overreach himself - he knows that the city politics is plagued by corruption, and he is determined to undermine them, no matter what the cost.

Thomas "Tommy" Vercetti

First appeared in "The Guy In A Hawaiian Suit"

Tommy reappeared in this game as one of Jose's homies. He went to Manila with Carl Johnson in order to bring down a rival smuggling ring.

Media

Radio Stations

Although the alpha version will still retain the default San Andreas radio stations, the proposed radio stations will parody the local media, more especially the mainstream radio stations that cater to the "masa" audience, with the DJs who often crack zany and rather ridiculous jokes. They play mostly novelty songs, often with simple lyrics and a colorful beat such as those songs composed by Lito Camo. The said stations also play some retro songs. There are also some stations which play jazz (mostly bossa nova), hip-hop and rnb.

Some of the songs that will be featured will come from the veteran parodists of the website Am I Right, such as:

  • "Spongebob" and "Strawberryland" by LPG-Unit
  • "Mend My PC" by Phil Alexander
  • "Jock Itch" by Below Average Dave

The said songs will probably be aired in Spoof FM, a radio station known for comedy music and stand up acts.

Advertisements

GTA won't be complete without the spoof advertisements present throughout the game, such as:

  • Isolated For A Month - "Twelve people. A boot camp. Will you survive in a complete state of isolation, with absolutely no contact with family and friends?" Isolated is an obvious parody of the popular reality show Big Brother, poking fun at the Philippine edition, which has earned critical reception these days.
  • GeniusPhone Prepaid - "I'll give you a 3G smartphone - if it craps you up, pwede ang refund!" The phone company promises users good prepaid deals and a huge selection of smartphones (mostly camera phones). They live up to their promises, and is generally sought after by cellphone users all over the country, like Jose. Said to be the first to introduce the electronic prepaid top-up service.
  • Paint My Heart - A teeny-bopper film starring a rookie young actor and a young actress, who just won in Isolated For A Month. The "film" pokes fun at the so-called "love teams" and romance movies starring real life actors and actresses who were sometimes criticized at Internet forums for having too much exposure and for acting in flicks that were said to have recycled plots.
  • Rejuven8 Food Supplement - A herbal food supplement, said to give wellness to the body, and is also said to increase the body's resistance against certain diseases.
  • Lightning Motor Raiden 125 - The Raiden is an underbone, lightweight cub "designed for everyday city riding". It is also claimed to be durable and reliable, as shown in a TV game show, although the said motorycle has actually failed in safety tests made by a German testing firm.
  • "Talagang Winner Ka!" - A TV game show, famous for giving away thousands of pesos worth of cash and other prizes, such as Lightning Motor's Raiden 125 bike. Winner Ka! parodies the ABS-CBN noontime show Wowwowwee.
  • Karaoke Plus Microphone - The microphone, a parody of Xtreme Magic Sing, is a device with karaoke capability built in. The said mic is pre-loaded with 25,000 MIDI songs.

* The following spoof advertisements are only proposed ones as of now, as voice acting isn't really as easy as you think... But we'll do it...
